The Reality:
Incarceration is impacting America's children, youth and families as never
before. In Miami-Dade County alone, it is estimated that more than 15,000
children have a parent in jail or in a state or federal prison. Perhaps
you yourself know of those who are also affected. Children who have an
incarcerated parent are at high-risk of living in poverty, dropping out of high
school, and later becoming incarcerated themselves. We can do something
about breaking this cycle.
The Challenge: The Family and Children Faith Coalition is partnering with
the Amachi Mentoring Project
to connect 200 South Florida children and youth with caring mentors in the next
year. Through the Service Network for Children of Inmates, more than 700
children with an incarcerated parent have been identified children who live in
most of the neighborhoods of Miami-Dade County .We believe that there are
nurturing adults in our communities willing to offer hope and positive role
models to these children by serving as mentors to them.
An Invitation: We'd like to invite you and your organization to an
upcoming Amachi Mentor Gathering that will prepare you to connect with this
vulnerable population in our community. Together, we can impact not only their
lives, but also the communities in which they live.
