Faith-based and community initiatives in the School District of Hillsborough County is a collaborative model, with a focus on programs and services that enhance student achievement, parent involvement, family literacy, and school/community partnerships in K-20 education.  The program is managed through the Office of Special Projects and Programs, which is housed in the Division of Instruction. A resource guide and training was provided to school principals to help them understand NCLB faith-based and community legislation, to provide an overview of best practices, to provide guidelines for building collaborations with faith-based and community organizations and guidelines for coordinating school/community activities.  Faith-based and community organizations received a resource guide to support after school and tutoring programs for students. Joint program sponsorships include the Annual Parent/Child Jamboree, which provides information and training to parents and students through collaborations with community associations, the school district, and community agencies.  Other programs include a partnership with the University of South Florida to provide mentoring and “adopt a school” resource bank with targeted schools, partnerships and grants from community organizations to support family literacy and parental involvement in inner city schools, and grants to support school/community literacy centers.  The program focus also includes quarterly meetings with faith-based and community organizations which feature guest speakers and which provide training and information in a variety of areas, including but not limited to the following:

·        School And District Information And Calendars

·        Grant Writing/Resources

·        Building School/Community Collaborations And Partnerships

·        Tutoring And Mentoring Programs

·        Before and After School Activities

·        Empowering & Partnering with Faith-Based & Community Problem Solvers

·        Early College Planning

Frontline Outreach Mentoring Program

The Governor’s Mentoring Initiative partnership with Frontline Outreach is designed to actively engage faith based organizations throughout Florida in an effort to increase mentors in Florida public schools that received a failing grade in 2001.  The project will educate and engage faith-based leaders and their congregations to help Florida’s students excel as students and citizens. The focus of this program is to urge faith-based organization to commit to spending one hour per week providing academic mentoring of a child in the public schools for one year.  The project is to encourage 50 faith-based organizations to connect with 50% of Florida’s failing schools by December 2003.

Frontline Outreach is a faith-based community organization, serving over 1,000 children and families in Orlando annually.  Its mission is to prepare tomorrow’s leaders with a vision for success and service.  The philosophy of excellence and service is firmly rooted in the Gospel of Jesus Christ. A freestanding ministry, Frontline receives its support from fees for service, investments by local corporations, private individuals, churches, foundations and government.

This project will enlist congregations to participate in school-based mentoring.  The leaders of those congregations and their designees will be targeted for the Governor’s Mentoring Initiative collaborative effort with Frontline Outreach.  Designees will include ministers of education and youth program leaders.

This program will begin in seven counties this first year in hopes to recruit over 200 mentors from the faith community. Counties include: Putnam, Marion, Hillsborough, Orange, Volusia, Duval and Wakulla. Mentor trainings will take place in each respective county, and then each district’s school volunteer coordinator will make mentor/mentee matches.

If you are interested in participating in this project, please email Mark Nelson at mark@volunteerflorida.org or you may reach him by calling (850) 413-0909.
